My Ex Wants to Talk - Should I Take Him Back?

Your ex wants to talk. That could be good news or bad. If you are thinking about taking him back, recall why you two are apart. If you broke it off because he was in any way abusive, in nature or deed, you need to remember that being lonely is better than being with someone for the wrong reasons. You have to respect yourself before you can be part of a healthy, loving relationship. If, however, you two had a strong relationship that was good once, you need to appraise what has happened since the two of you split.

If your ex wants to talk, and you get the feeling that he is just paying lip service, tell him that you think the two of you need some more time apart. A lot of the time, there is a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, "between the sheets" reunion immediately following the break. The person who was dumped whines and cries so much that the person who called it off feels guilty. They get together for a night, they both feel horrible the next day, and they are in a worse spot than they were to begin with. Don't give in to loneliness for a one-nighter.

When your ex wants to talk, if you decide to hear what he has to say, set up a meeting in a public place during the day. You should have some measure of privacy, but you also want him to know that either of you can leave if you feel uncomfortable. If he begins to talk about the past, good or bad, get the conversation back on now, and the future, and how he has changed.

Remember, just because your ex wants to talk, you do not have to listen. Don't be bullied into a reunion. If he appears genuinely changed, and you have heard good things from others about him while you were apart, maybe you can give him a shot. Let him know that you will work at the relationship as well, no breakup is one-sided; you both shoulder some blame.

Whatever you decide to do when your ex wants to talk, make sure that you both make a serious attempt at reconciling the problems, or you are both wasting your time. If your ex is not committed to working on the relationship, and proving he has changed, you can make sure you don't listen the next time your ex wants to talk.
